The Vernal Equinox is Happening this March, PAGASA Reports

The Vernal Equinox which marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere is happening at 6:00 PM (Philippine Standard Time) on March 20, 2021.

“The Sun’s motion allows it to pass the First Point of Aries (known as Vernal Equinox). It marks the zero point of the Right Ascension grid, the celestial equivalent of longitude on Earth. The First Point of Aries now lies in Pisces.”

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the March 20 equinox is also the “astronomical end of winter”.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) stated that night and day are about the same length on the same latitude in both hemispheres on the day of the equinox.

The word equinox, according to NASA, comes from the Latin words for “equal night.”
