Typhoon Uwan Continues to Rapidly Intensify as It Nears the Philippine Sea East of Bicol

Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong) continues to rapidly intensify as it moves closer toward the Bicol Region. PAGASA has now raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 over parts of Bicol and Northern Samar as the system continues to strengthen over the Philippine Sea.

Current Status

  • Location (as of 4:00 PM): 575 km East of Catarman, Northern Samar or 620 km East of Virac, Catanduanes (12.9°N, 129.9°E)
  • Maximum sustained winds: 150 km/h near the center
  • Gustiness: Up to 185 km/h
  • Central pressure: 955 hPa
  • Movement: West northwestward at 30 km/h
  • Extent of winds: Strong to typhoon-force winds extending outward up to 800 km from the center

Track and Intensity Outlook

Typhoon Uwan is expected to:

  • Move west-northwestward until Sunday (Nov. 9), then northwestward by Monday (Nov. 10).
  • Pass close to Catanduanes by Sunday morning.
  • Make landfall over the southern portion of Isabela or northern Aurora between late Sunday and early Monday.
  • Possibly shift slightly south, increasing the chance of a direct hit or landfall over Catanduanes.
  • Cross the mountainous terrain of Northern Luzon and emerge over the Lingayen Gulf or Pangasinan–La Union coast by Monday.
  • Reach super typhoon strength tonight or early Sunday before slightly weakening but remaining a typhoon while over Luzon.

Heavy Rainfall

Refer to Weather Advisory No. 7 for rainfall details. Heavy to intense rain is expected in Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and parts of Central and Northern Luzon.

Severe Winds

  • Signal No. 3: Moderate to significant impacts possible.
  • Signal No. 2: Minor to moderate impacts possible.
  • Signal No. 1: Minimal to minor impacts possible.
  • Highest Possible Signal: TCWS No. 5

Gusty conditions are likely even outside wind signal areas:

  • Nov. 8–9:Palawan, Visayas, Mindanao

Storm Surge and Coastal Flooding

Life-threatening storm surge over 3 meters is possible within 48 hours in the coastal communities of:
Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, and Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

A Gale Warning remains in effect for the:

  • Northern, eastern, and southern seaboards of Luzon
  • Eastern and central seaboards of Visayas
  • Eastern seaboard of Mindanao

Wave heights:

  • Up to 14.0 m: Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte
  • Up to 12.0 m: Isabela, Aurora, Cagayan (east), Albay, Sorsogon, Polillo Islands, Northern Samar
  • Up to 9.0 m: Northern Quezon, northern Eastern Samar
  • Up to 7.0 m: Eastern Eastern Samar, Cagayan (other coasts), Babuyan Islands
  • Up to 6.0 m: Zambales, eastern Quezon, remaining coasts of Bicol and Northern Samar
  • Up to 5.0 m: Dinagat Islands, Siargao, Bucas Grande Islands

All sea travel is extremely risky. Mariners are advised to stay in port or seek shelter immediately.

Advisory

  • Monitor PAGASA bulletins and local government updates.
  • Prepare for possible evacuations in flood-prone or coastal areas.
  • Avoid sea travel across all affected waters.
