Super Typhoon Nando nears Babuyan Islands; Babuyan Islands now under Signal No. 5

Life-threatening conditions are imminent over the northern portion of Northern Luzon as Super Typhoon Nando approaches the Babuyan Islands, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Current Status
As of 10:00 AM, the eye of Super Typhoon Nando was located at 110 km east of Calayan, Cagayan (19.4°N, 122.5°E). The system has maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 265 km/h, and a central pressure of 910 hPa. It is moving westward at 20 km/h. Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 600 km from the center.

A Gale Warning is in effect over the seaboards of Northern Luzon and eastern seaboard of Central Luzon.

- Up to 10.0 m: Northern seaboard of mainland Cagayan; remaining seaboards of Ilocos Norte

Coastal Inundation
High risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3.0 m within 24 hours over low-lying or exposed coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur. Refer to Storm Surge Warning No. 9 (8:00 AM).
Track and Intensity Outlook
- Nando will continue moving westward toward Babuyan Islands.
- The center of Nando may pass close to or make landfall over Babuyan Islands between noon and early afternoon today. It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by tomorrow (Sept. 23) morning.
- Nando may maintain or further intensify before close approach to Babuyan Islands.
