Nando further intensifies as it continues to traverse the PH Sea; Benguet now under Signal No. 1

Typhoon Nando has further intensified while moving northwestward over the Philippine Sea, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

Current Status

As of 10:00 PM, the eye of Typhoon Nando was located at 710 km east of Echague, Isabela or 695 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan (17.5°N, 128.3°E). The system has maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 190 km/h, and a central pressure of 950 hPa. It is moving northwestward at 15 km/h. Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 530 km from the center.

Severe Winds

Areas under Signal No. 1 may experience minimal to minor wind impacts. Winds may be stronger in coastal and upland areas. The highest possible signal during Nando’s passage is Signal No. 5.

The Southwest Monsoon and the trough of Nando will also bring strong to gale-force gusts:

  • Today, Sept. 20: Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga
  • Tomorrow, Sept. 21: Metro Manila, Central Luzon (areas not under signal), CALABARZON, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental
  • Monday, Sept. 22: Central Luzon (areas not under signal), Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Zamboanga Peninsula, BARMM, SOCCSKSARGEN, Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental

Coastal Waters

A Gale Warning is in effect over the northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Luzon.

Very rough to very high seas may prevail:

  • Up to 11 m: Seaboards of Babuyan Islands; northeastern seaboard of mainland Cagayan
  • Up to 8.0 m: Seaboards of Batanes; remaining seaboards of mainland Cagayan
  • Up to 5.5 m: Seaboard of Isabela
  • Up to 4.5 m: Northeastern seaboard of Aurora; northern seaboard of Ilocos Norte

Rough seas:

  • Up to 3.5 m: Remaining seaboards of Aurora; northern and eastern seaboard of Polillo Islands
  • Up to 3.0 m: Remaining seaboard of Ilocos Norte; northern and eastern seaboards of Catanduanes

Moderate seas:

  • Up to 2.5 m: Eastern seaboards of Albay and Sorsogon; northern and eastern seaboards of Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Northern Samar

All mariners are advised not to venture out to sea under these conditions. Coastal inundation warnings remain in effect.

Coastal Inundation

There is a high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3.0 m within the next 48 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur. Refer to Storm Surge Warning No. 3 (8:00 PM).

Track and Intensity Outlook

  • Nando will begin turning west northwestward toward Extreme Northern Luzon.
  • The center of Nando may pass close to or make landfall over Batanes or Babuyan Islands between Monday (Sept. 22) afternoon or evening. It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday (Sept. 23) morning.
  • Nando will continue to intensify and may reach super typhoon category tomorrow before approaching Extreme Northern Luzon.

Advisory

The public and disaster risk reduction offices are advised to take all necessary precautions. Residents in high-risk areas should prepare for possible evacuation and continue monitoring official advisories from PAGASA and their Regional Services Divisions.

The next tropical cyclone bulletin will be issued at 5:00 AM tomorrow.
