Severe Tropical Storm Opong maintains strength east of Samar

Severe Tropical Storm Opong maintains its strength while moving westward over the Philippine Sea.
Current Status
As of 1:00 PM, the center of Severe Tropical StormOpong was located at 300 km east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar (11.0°N, 128.5°E), based on all available data including Guiuan Doppler Weather Radar. It has maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 135 km/h, and a central pressure of 980 hPa. It is moving westward at 15 km/h. Strong to storm-force winds extend outward up to 430 km from the center.

- Luzon: Southern Quezon, eastern Marinduque, northeastern Romblon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate
- Visayas: Rest of Northern Samar, central Eastern Samar, northern and central Samar, Biliran, northern Leyte (Calubian)

Other Hazards Affecting Land Areas
Heavy Rainfall
Heavy rainfall is expected as Opong and the Southwest Monsoon continue to affect the country. Flooding and landslides are possible in high-risk areas.
Severe Winds
- Signal No. 3: Moderate to significant impacts possible
- Signal No. 2: Minor to moderate impacts possible
- Signal No. 1: Minimal to minor impacts possible
The highest signal that may be raised during the passage of Opong is Signal No. 4.
The Southwest Monsoon enhanced by Opong will bring strong to gale-force gusts over many areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
Coastal Waters
Very rough to high seas are expected:
- Up to 11.0 m: Catanduanes; eastern seaboards of Albay and Sorsogon; northern and eastern seaboards of Northern Samar and Eastern Samar
- Up to 6.0 m: Northern and eastern seaboards of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur
- Up to 5.0 m: Quezon, Marinduque, Romblon, and remaining Bicol seaboards
Rough seas also affect other areas including Isabela, Aurora, Batangas, Mindoro, Samar, Biliran, northern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands. Sea travel is risky for small seacrafts.

Coastal Inundation
Storm surge heights exceeding 3.0 m are possible within 36 hours over low-lying or exposed coastal areas of Metro Manila, Central Luzon, CALABARZON, Bicol Region, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, and Cebu.
Track and Intensity Outlook
- Opong is moving west northwestward toward Eastern Visayas–Southern Luzon. It may make landfall over Northern Samar early morning of September 26, then cross Bicol Region during the day before traversing Southern Luzon until early September 27.
- Opong may reach typhoon category before landfall, weaken slightly as it crosses land, and then re-intensify over the West Philippine Sea.
- Exit from PAR is expected by late September 27.
Advisory
The public and disaster risk reduction offices are advised to take precautionary measures and monitor official bulletins. Residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas should prepare for possible evacuation.
