Colder Days Ahead: PAGASA Declares Onset of Amihan Season

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has announced the onset of the northeast monsoon or Amihan on Monday.

In the press release by the weather bureau, strong to gale-force northeasterly winds have prevailed over Northern Luzon for the past several days. This is due to the strengthening of the higher-pressure system over Siberia. This is also enhanced by the passing of low-pressure areas (LPAs).

The gradual cooling of the surface air temperature over the northeastern part of Luzon has also been observed, indicating the start of the amihan season in the Philippines.

Surges of cold temperatures may be expected in the coming months as the northeast wind flow is expected to gradually become more dominant over Northern Luzon and bring cold and dry air.

The Northeast monsoon rainfall may be enhanced by the ongoing La Niña. This could trigger floods, flash floods, and rain-induced landslides over susceptible areas.
