Baguio City Prepares for New Virus Strain



In a post today, January 6, 2021 (Wednesday), of Public Information Office (PIO)- City of Baguio, it was stated that city Mayor Benjamin Magalong wants Baguio City to be prepared for the new coronavirus strain which is said to be more infectious than the present variant.

Furthermore, it was reported that the new strain of the virus was identified in the UK. 

Last January 4, 2021, in the mayor’s first public address at the City Hall, he has stated that in preparation for the new surge the city “will focus on improving its surge capacity by increasing the bed capacity of the community isolation units it has established at the course of the pandemic to 1,000 by the end of January.”

We are now preparing for the surge capacity, we have now a total of 654 beds and we intend to increase it by the end of this month to 1,000 in preparation for that surge.”

In addition, it was stated in the PIO-Baguio post that apart from the isolation beds in the five hospitals with COVID-19 response capability, the following six community isolation facilities of the city has presently a total of 654 beds:

  • Baguio City Community Isolation Unit at the Sto. Niño Medical Center
  • Baguio Teachers’ Camp Community Isolation Unit (Roxas Hall)
  • Baguio Teachers’ Camp Isolation Unit (Superintendent’s Quarters and Hernandez Hall)
  • V Dorm 1
  • V Dorm 3
  • Ferionni Apartments

Also, in the mayor’s public address he has mentioned “…we will also have to strictly execute our multi-source surveillance, tuloy-tuloy pa rin po ang paggamit ng different types of analytical tools to be able to analyze and assess our present COVID-19 situation.”
