Atok Sakura Park: Japan-Inspired Cherry Trees in the Mountains of Benguet

When you think of cherry blossoms, your mind probably wanders to Japan — but did you know you can see sakura trees right here in the Philippines? Nestled in the cool highlands of Atok, Benguet is the Atok Sakura Park, a quiet destination where visitors can walk among Japanese cherry blossoms without leaving Luzon.

A Brief History: How Sakura Trees Came to Benguet

The park is the result of a sisterhood agreement between Atok and Kochi Prefecture, Japan. In 2016, over 30 cherry blossom trees were planted in celebration of Filipino-Japanese friendship.

Planted in a town known for its cool, high-altitude weather, Atok’s climate provides the ideal environment for sakura to thrive — a rare feat in the tropics.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

The cherry blossoms bloom around February to March, depending on the weather. This timing often overlaps with the flower festival season and Northern Blossom’s full bloom.

How to Get to Atok Sakura Park

Atok Sakura Park is located at Paoay, Atok Benguet, quite far when you attempt to go there on foot, about 10-15 minutes drive

Directions:

  • By private car: Use Google Maps or Waze and set your destination to “Atok, Paoay Sakura Park.”
  • By public transport: Take a van or bus from Baguio to Sayangan, Atok. Once there, head to the Atok Tourism Office where you can hire a Tamaraw FX vehicle with a driver to take you directly to the Sakura Park and nearby attractions.

There are no tricycles operating in the area due to the mountainous terrain, so the Tamaraw FX is your most convenient and reliable option.

Entrance Fee

While there is no separate fee to enter Atok Sakura Park, access is included with the entrance fee to Haight’s Place, as the two gardens are adjacent and owned by the same family.

What to Expect at the Park

  • Peaceful gardens with cherry trees lining the slope
  • Scenic viewpoints of the Cordillera mountain ranges
  • A perfect picnic and photo spot for nature lovers
  • Fewer crowds than other flower farms in Atok

While the Sakura park is relatively small, it offers a unique cultural experience and a reminder of how global friendship can literally blossom.

Tips Before You Go

  • Bring a jacket — it can get windy and cold even during the day
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes
  • Respect the trees — no picking or shaking branches
  • Use a wide-angle lens or phone camera to capture the views
