Typhoon “Chedeng” Maintains Strength Over Philippine Sea

Current Status and Projections

As of 10:00 AM today, the eye of Typhoon Chedeng was located approximately 920 km east of Northern Luzon. Its maximum sustained winds measure 130 km/h near the center, with gustiness up to 160 km/h. The typhoon’s current central pressure is 975 hPa.

Presently moving north northwestward at a speed of 10 km/h, Chedeng extends its strong to typhoon-force winds outwards up to 520 km from the center. Despite the typhoon’s strength, no wind signals have been issued at this time.

Potential Land and Sea Impact

Heavy Rainfall and Wind Outlook

Direct heavy rainfall over the country within the next 3 to 5 days is not anticipated from Chedeng. However, the typhoon may enhance the Southwest Monsoon, resulting in occasional rains over southwestern Luzon for the next three days. In addition, gusty conditions, especially in coastal and upland/mountainous regions exposed to winds, may be experienced over several areas for the next few days due to the monsoon’s enhancement.

Coastal Water Conditions

Over the next 24 hours, Chedeng is expected to cause moderate to rough seas (2.0 to 3.5 m) over the seaboards of Extreme Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland Northern Luzon. Small seacraft mariners are advised to take precautions, and inexperienced or ill-equipped vessels are urged to avoid navigating under these conditions.

Future Trajectory and Intensity

Chedeng is forecasted to continue its northwestward trajectory over the next 12 hours before turning generally north or north northeastward tomorrow. The typhoon is likely reaching its peak intensity of 140 km/h within the next 24 to 36 hours due to marginally favorable environmental conditions. A weakening trend may begin during the weekend, but Chedeng is expected to remain a typhoon throughout the forecast period. It is anticipated to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday.
