STS Gorio Slightly Decelerates Over Philippine Sea

Severe Tropical Storm GORIO (PODUL) has slightly decelerated while moving west southwestward east of Extreme Northern Luzon. The weather bureau says it remains unlikely to directly affect the country in the next three days, but a southward shift in its track could bring wind signals to Extreme Northern Luzon.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the center of Severe Tropical Storm GORIO was estimated at 4:00 PM today about 1,045 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon (20.5°N, 132.0°E). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 135 km/h, and is moving west southwestward at 20 km/h — slightly slower than earlier today. Strong to storm-force winds extend outward up to 280 kilometers from the center.

• Next 12 hours: Moving generally westward.
• From 12 August afternoon onward: Turning west northwestward until the end of the forecast period.
• Landfall/Exit: Possible landfall over the eastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday (13 August) afternoon before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Wednesday evening.
• GORIO may intensify into a typhoon before landfall in Taiwan, then weaken as it moves inland.

Hazards Affecting Land Areas

Severe Tropical Storm GORIO is unlikely to directly affect the country in the next three days. However, PAGASA warns that a further southward shift in its forecast track could lead to the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Extreme Northern Luzon.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

• Moderate seas (up to 2.0 meters) are expected over the coastal waters of Extreme Northern Luzon.
• Mariners of small vessels, especially motor bancas, are advised to take precautionary measures and avoid navigating in these conditions if inexperienced or operating ill-equipped boats.

• Ongoing (may persist 30–60 mins): Moderate to occasionally heavy rainshowers with lightning and strong winds over Benguet (Atok, Bakun, Buguias, Kapangan, Kibungan, Mankayan, Tublay), Ifugao (Tinoc, Aguinaldo), Ilocos Sur (Alilem, Sugpon, Cervantes), and Pangasinan (Infanta).
  Residents along mountain slopes are advised to be alert for possible landslides, mudslides, rockslides, and flash floods.
