PAGASA Declares the Start of “Habagat” in the country

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially announced the start of the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, in the country. The declaration was made after several days of persistent low-level southwesterly winds affecting the western section of Luzon and the presence of a frontal system over Extreme Northern Luzon.

Key Indicators of the Monsoon Onset

PAGASA’s recent weather analysis noted the weakening of Easterlies—typically warm and dry winds from the Pacific—and the growing influence of the southwesterly flow. These conditions are consistent with the typical patterns that signal the transition to the monsoon season in the Philippines.

According to PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando, these developments are precursors to the onset of the rainy season, which is expected to occur within the next two weeks, especially over the western parts of the country.

What to Expect During Habagat

  • Frequent Rain Showers and Thunderstorms: The western sections of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will likely experience intermittent to frequent rainfall.
  • Monsoon Breaks: Short dry periods, known as monsoon breaks, may also occur in between rainy days.
  • Flood and Landslide Risks: The public is advised to remain alert, especially in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas.

Precautionary Measures

PAGASA urges local government units, disaster response teams, and the general public to prepare for the possible adverse effects of heavy rains, including:

  • Urban and flash flooding
  • Overflowing of rivers and tributaries
  • Rain-induced landslides in mountainous areas

For timely updates, PAGASA advises the public to monitor official forecasts and advisories.
