Filipina Nurse in UK Awarded British Empire Medal in the “New Years Honours”

Charito Romano, a Filipina staff nurse in the United Kingdom has been recognized for her “outstanding” work at the height of the pandemic. She is among the medalists of the Order of the British Empire in Queen Elizabeth II’s awards for “New Year Honours List 2021.”

The Honours List, according to the government of the UK, marks the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom. The said list is usually published at New Year and on the Queen’s official birthday in June.

Romano is originally from Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, studied nursing at the Wesleyan University Philippines and worked at the Philippine Population Office in their province. And since 2018, Romano works as a nurse at the Arbrook House Care Home in Esher, England.

On a news release published by the Department of Labor and Employment on Sunday, January 3, 2021, the department stated that Romano proudly shared that from March to 29 December 2020, Arbrook House is COVID-free.

Daniel Pruce, the British Ambassador to the Philippines, also acknowledged Romano’s service and congratulated her in a tweet. Here’s what the ambassador stated:

Department of Labor and Employment Also Congratulates Filipina Nurse

Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III also congratulated the Filipino nurse for the recognition received from the Queen of England. Here’s a statement from the Labor Secretary as presented by the Department of Labor and Employment:

“Our congratulations may not be enough to express how our government is grateful to her for making our people very proud… Nurse Romano’s outstanding performance exemplifies the Filipino virtues at work even under worst conditions and personal risks. What a very inspiring story for our overseas workers to start the new year.”
