Super Typhoon Champi Expected to Enter PAR as Rosal on Tuesday
Super Typhoon Champi has intensified while over the sea near Guam and is forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, according to PAGASA.
In its Tropical Cyclone Advisory issued at 5:00 AM on Sunday, October 18, PAGASA said Champi is expected to maintain its super typhoon strength as it approaches PAR. Once inside, the tropical cyclone will be given the local name Rosal.
PAGASA also warned that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals may be raised over parts of Northern Luzon and the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening, October 19.
Champi Intensifies Into a Super Typhoon
As of 4:00 AM on October 18, the center of Super Typhoon Champi was estimated at 2,230 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon, outside PAR.
The super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near its center, gustiness of up to 230 km/h, and a central pressure of 940 hPa.
Champi is moving west-northwestward at 25 km/h, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending outward up to 480 kilometers from its center.
Expected to Enter PAR on October 20
PAGASA forecasts Champi to continue moving generally west-northwestward and enter PAR between Tuesday morning and afternoon, October 20.
Upon entering PAR, it will be named Rosal.
The tropical cyclone is forecast to continue moving west-northwestward toward Taiwan.
Champi is expected to maintain its super typhoon strength upon entering PAR. However, gradual weakening is likely to begin by Wednesday, October 21, after the cyclone reaches its peak intensity.
Wind Signals May Be Raised Over Northern Luzon and Bicol
PAGASA said Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals may be hoisted over the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon and portions of the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
Under the current forecast scenario, the highest possible wind signal is Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3 or No. 4.
These are forecast possibilities, not wind signals already raised.
Gusty conditions are also likely to begin affecting most parts of Luzon and Visayas, as well as portions of Mindanao, by Wednesday, October 21, or Thursday, October 22.
Heavy Rains Expected Over Extreme Northern Luzon
PAGASA warned that the approaching tropical cyclone will bring heavy rainfall to Extreme Northern Luzon.
A separate Weather Advisory will be issued ahead of the expected rainfall to provide more detailed information about the areas that may be affected.
The October 18 advisory does not provide a specific heavy rainfall forecast for Baguio City or Benguet.
Residents are advised to monitor subsequent PAGASA advisories as the tropical cyclone approaches PAR.
Hazardous Sea Conditions Expected
Moderate to rough seas may begin affecting the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao by Tuesday.
By Wednesday, October 21, hazardous sea conditions reaching very rough, high, or very high seas may affect the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon.
PAGASA said a Gale Warning for very rough seas will be issued on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
Continue Monitoring PAGASA Updates
With Champi forecast to enter PAR at super typhoon strength, PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to continue monitoring official weather updates.
The forecast track, intensity, and areas potentially affected by strong winds and heavy rainfall may change as new information becomes available.
The next Tropical Cyclone Advisory is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Sunday, October 18, unless an intermediate advisory is issued.
