President Marcos Signs Law Postponing Barangay and SK Elections to 2026
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has signed Republic Act No. 12232, postponing the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to November 2026 and setting four-year terms for officials.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has signed into law Republic Act No. 12232, officially resetting the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections to November 2026.
Under the new law, the term of office for all elected barangay and SK officials will now be four years, with a limit of three consecutive terms for barangay officials and one term for SK officials in the same position. Voluntary resignation will not be considered an interruption in service for the purposes of the term limit.
New Election Schedule and Assumption of Office
The next barangay and SK elections will be held on the first Monday of November 2026 and every four years thereafter. Officials elected after the law takes effect will assume office on the first day of December following their election.
Hold-Over Provision
All incumbent officials will remain in their positions until their successors are elected and qualified, unless they are removed or suspended for cause.
Transitional Rule
Barangay officials currently serving their third consecutive term will not be eligible to run for the same position in the 2026 elections.
Implementation and Effectivity
The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) has 90 days from the law’s effectivity to release the implementing rules and regulations. The law takes effect immediately after its publication in the Official Gazette or a newspaper of general circulation.
RA 12232 is a consolidation of Senate Bill No. 2816 and House Bill No. 11287, which were passed by Congress on June 11, 2025, and signed by President Marcos on August 13, 2025.
