Marvel Comics to Debut New Fil-Am “Captain America”
Marvel Comics revealed on Friday that a new superhero will arrive on the fourth issue of the upcoming ‘The United States of Captain America” series. This includes Filipino-American superhero Ari Agbayani, which is one of the diverse cast of heroes to debut as part of Captain America’s 80th anniversary.
Arielle “Ari” Agbayani is a local Captain America-inspired hero created by writer Alyssa Wong and Jodi Nishijima who seeks justice on her college campus. She is a scholarship student at a small, private university. When she finds out her best friend is being victimized by a wealthy legacy student, Ari is determined to make things right.
According to Wong, she immediately thought of a Fil-Am superhero when her editor approached her about creating a new, local Captain America. Nishijima is also honored to bring Ari to life. “To be able to lend my thoughts and experiences to a property and concept I greatly admire, as well as work alongside such talented and diverse creators, brings me an excitement that cannot be understated,” she added.
It means the world to write a character who reflects my community. I’m honored by the support and kind words we’ve seen about Arielle! And as a Fil Am kid who didn’t see many characters like me, I’m glad that’s changing and I hope we’ll continue to see many more in the future!
