Hidilyn Diaz gives the Philippines its very first Olympic Gold Medal




Finally, after years of joining the Olympics, the Philippines got its first Gold Medal. Hidilyn Diaz bested eight competitors to take home the gold in the women’s 55kg weightlifting competition. A gold medal that the Philippines waited for almost 100 years.

Hidilyn Diaz, the silver medalist during the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics returned to the podium, this time carrying the gold. She bested her competition, her total combined weight lifted of 224kgs. puts her on top of her competition Liao Qiuyun of China, who is also a world record holder, and Zulfiya Chinshanlo of Kazakhstan.

Aside from winning the gold medal, Diaz also set a new Olympic record by lifting 124kg in her second attempt.
