Fire Erupts at Baguio City’s Maharlika Livelihood Center: Firefighters Battle Blaze

The Maharlika Livelihood Center, a historic establishment and a bustling hub in Baguio City, is currently engulfed in flames. The fire, which is believed to have started on the third floor of the building, was first noticed around 1AM. As of 4 AM, firefighters are still valiantly battling to control the blaze.

The Maharlika Livelihood Center has been a significant part of Baguio City’s landscape since its inauguration in 1982. It was opened under the auspices of then First Lady Imelda Marcos, who was serving as the human settlements minister at the time. This establishment holds the distinction of being the first shopping mall and livelihood hub in the city, making it a landmark for both locals and tourists alike.

Currently, the Maharlika Livelihood Center is under a 50-year lease that is set to expire on April 27, 2025. The facility is managed by the Human Settlement and Development Corporation, which is a part of the Department of Agriculture. Spanning three hectares, this prime property is strategically located adjacent to the Baguio Public Market, further cementing its importance to the community.

Firefighters have been on the scene since the early hours, working tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby structures. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation once the flames are extinguished.

Residents and business owners in the area are anxiously awaiting updates, hoping for a swift resolution to this crisis. The loss of the Maharlika Livelihood Center would be a significant blow to the community, given its historical importance and role as a commercial hub.

Updates will continue to be provided as more information becomes available. The thoughts and prayers of the Baguio community are with the firefighters and all those affected by this devastating fire.
