COVID-19 can cause Heart Damage to Patients, even Asymptomatic ones, According to a Study

Researchers from University Hospital Frankfurt, University of Messina, Sechenov University, and Institute for Cardiac Diagnostic and Therapy, Berlin, Germany has found out, through an original investigation, that the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause heart damage even to those who have recently recovered from the disease.

Their study is called “Outcomes of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients Recently Recovered From Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)” which has been published in the JAMA Network journal on July 27, 2020.

The said study involved one hundred (100) adult participants who recently recovered from COVID-19 infection. Most patients recovered at home and are either asymptomatic or had minor to moderate symptoms; while a total of thirty-three (33) were severely unwell and required hospitalization.

Findings of their study show that out of the 100 participants, seventy-eight (78) patients had cardiovascular involvement which has been detected by standardized cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR), independent of preexisting conditions, illness severity, and the time from diagnosis.

Myocardial inflammation was the most prevalent abnormality, which has been detected in sixty (60) patients, and it was followed by regional scar and pericardial enhancement.

“These findings indicate the need for ongoing investigation of the long-term cardiovascular consequences of COVID-19,” the researches wrote on their study.
