Champi Re-Intensifies Into Super Typhoon; Expected to Enter PAR Tuesday

Super Typhoon Champi has regained super typhoon strength as it moves closer to the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), with PAGASA forecasting its entry on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

In Tropical Cyclone Advisory No. 5A issued at 5:00 PM on Monday, October 19, PAGASA reported that Champi has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and may intensify further while moving over the Philippine Sea.

Once it enters PAR, the tropical cyclone will be given the local name Rosal.

Champi Now 1,515 Kilometers East of Southeastern Luzon

As of 4:00 PM, the center of Super Typhoon Champi was estimated at 1,515 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon, still outside PAR.

The super typhoon has maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h, gustiness of up to 230 km/h, and a central pressure of 940 hPa.

Champi is moving west-northwestward at 15 km/h, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending outward up to 720 kilometers from its center.

Expected to Enter PAR on October 20

PAGASA forecasts Champi to enter PAR on Tuesday morning or early afternoon, October 20.

The tropical cyclone is expected to continue moving west-northwestward until Wednesday, October 21, before shifting generally northwestward beginning Thursday, October 22.

Under the current forecast, Champi is expected to exit PAR by Saturday, October 24.

PAGASA said Champi will likely maintain its super typhoon strength upon entering PAR, with further intensification still possible.

Gradual weakening is forecast to begin by Thursday after the tropical cyclone reaches its peak intensity.

Wind Signals May Be Raised Over Northern Luzon and Bicol

PAGASA warned that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals may be raised over the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon and parts of the Bicol Region as early as Monday evening, October 19, or Tuesday morning, October 20.

Under the latest forecast scenario, the highest possible wind signal is Wind Signal No. 2 or No. 3.

This is a change from the October 18 advisory, which indicated a possible highest Wind Signal of No. 3 or No. 4.

These are forecast scenarios, and the October 19 advisory does not indicate that these signals have already been raised.

Gusty conditions are also likely to begin affecting most parts of Luzon and Visayas, along with portions of Mindanao, by Wednesday, October 21.

Heavy Rainfall Expected Over Extreme Northern Luzon

PAGASA said Champi will bring heavy rainfall over Extreme Northern Luzon.

A separate Weather Advisory will be issued to provide further details about the anticipated heavy rains.

For Baguio City and Benguet, the latest tropical cyclone advisory does not specify rainfall amounts or a direct heavy rainfall forecast.

However, residents should continue monitoring official advisories for changes in the forecast and possible weather impacts as Champi approaches PAR.

Hazardous Sea Conditions Possible Beginning Tuesday

Moderate to rough seas may begin affecting the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, as well as the eastern seaboards of Visayas and Mindanao, by Tuesday.

By Wednesday, October 21, hazardous sea conditions reaching very rough, high, or very high seas may affect the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon.

PAGASA expects to issue a Gale Warning for very rough seas on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

Public Advised to Monitor Updates

With Champi expected to enter PAR at super typhoon strength, PAGASA advised the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices to continue monitoring official tropical cyclone advisories.

The forecast track, intensity, and potential impacts may still change as the weather system develops.

The next Tropical Cyclone Advisory is scheduled for 11:00 PM on Monday, October 19, unless an intermediate advisory is issued.
