Atok Suspends Tourism Activities Amid Marce Threat

The Municipality of Atok, Benguet, under the leadership of Mayor Franklin L. Smith, has issued Executive Order No. 2024-58, which mandates the suspension of all tourism activities starting November 5, 2024, until further notice. This suspension is a proactive measure to protect the safety and well-being of residents and visitors due to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm “Marce.”

Reason for the Suspension

According to DOST-PAGASA’s Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 2, Tropical Storm “Marce” has intensified slightly as it moves west-northwestward over the Philippine Sea, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Forecasts indicate that “Marce” is likely to make landfall in Northern Luzon around November 7 or 8, with a strong possibility of further intensification. This storm brings increased risks of rain-induced landslides and flooding, especially in mountainous regions like Atok.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC), after a Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment Meeting on November 4, 2024, recommended the suspension of tourism activities to prevent potential accidents and ensure public safety.

Guidelines for Tourists and Tourism Businesses

Under the executive order:

  • Tourists, both local and foreign, are strongly advised to postpone any travel plans to Atok until further advisories are issued. Travelers are encouraged to stay updated on weather conditions via DOST-PAGASA.
  • Tourism businesses and enterprises, including transient houses and tourist spots that already have guests on-site, are required to implement safety protocols. This includes ensuring the safety of their guests, maintaining communication with the Municipal Tourism Officer and Barangay DRRMC, and conducting regular inventory checks to manage guests appropriately. All businesses are urged to continuously monitor weather updates for timely responses.
  • Safety of employees and tour guides is also a priority. Tourism operators are advised to stay vigilant and prepared for any potential hazards posed by the tropical storm, such as landslides and floods.

Additional Information

The suspension order underscores the municipality’s dedication to public safety and disaster preparedness. The executive order is effective starting November 5, 2024, and will remain in place until it is deemed safe to resume tourism activities.

Important Reminders

The local government of Atok encourages everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this period. Tourists and residents should monitor announcements from DOST-PAGASA and local authorities for the latest updates regarding Tropical Storm “Marce” and any subsequent actions related to this directive.
