AstraZeneca paused its COVID-19 Vaccine Trial

The clinical trial for the vaccine against the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) which was being developed by the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca with the University of Oxford researchers has been put to hold. According to Stat News, the first who reported about the update, the trial was halted due to a “suspected serious adverse reaction.”

AstraZeneca’s Phase 3 study for their vaccine against COVID-19 was being developed at several sites across the U.S. and the said adverse reaction was observed in a participant from the United Kingdom.

“…our standard review process was triggered and we voluntarily paused vaccination to allow the review of safety data by an independent committee,” said Michele Meixell, a company spokesperson. “This is a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials…”

The company spokesperson noted in their statement: “In large trials illnesses will happen by chance but must be independently reviewed to check this carefully.” In addition, she also said that they are committed to the safety of their participants and the highest standards of conduct in their trials.
