PAGASA Declares Habagat Over: What It Means for Baguio

Excerpt: PAGASA has declared the end of Habagat and the rainy season over western Luzon and Visayas. Here is what Baguio residents should know.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) officially declared the end of the Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat, on October 5, 2026.

The declaration also marks the end of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

Why PAGASA Declared the End of Habagat

PAGASA identified several changes in the weather pattern over recent days:

  • A strengthening high-pressure system over East Asia;
  • The southward movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ); and
  • Weaker Southwest Monsoon winds and reduced rainfall associated with Habagat.

Forecasts indicate that these conditions will continue in the coming days, supporting the declaration.

Does This Mean Rain Will Stop in Baguio?

Rain clouds over Baguio City as PAGASA announces the end of Habagat season.

Residents should avoid treating a seasonal announcement as a guarantee of rain-free days. PAGASA explains that tropical cyclones influence rainfall in the Philippines, and July through October is historically the peak of the typhoon season.

This means weather preparedness remains relevant even after Habagat ends. For Baguio households, practical steps include keeping drainage channels clear, checking roofs for leaks, and keeping rain gear available for school and work. These are general preparedness suggestions, rather than a forecast of conditions in the city.

Decisions about outdoor activities should still be based on the latest local forecast and weather warnings.

Has Amihan Started?

The October 5 release does not declare the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, or Amihan. The end of Habagat should therefore not be presented as an official announcement that Amihan has begun.

Continue Monitoring Official Updates

PAGASA said it will continue monitoring weather and climate conditions and advised the public and concerned agencies to regularly check its information.

For Baguio residents, make it a habit to check forecasts and advisories before leaving home, particularly when rain could affect the day’s activities.
