Typhoon Saudel May Enter PAR on August 24, Could Become a Super Typhoon
Typhoon Saudel, currently outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), is forecast to further intensify and could reach Super Typhoon category by Monday, August 24, according to PAGASA.
In its Tropical Cyclone Advisory issued at 11:00 AM today, August 23, 2026, PAGASA said Saudel is moving west northwestward over the Philippine Sea east of Extreme Northern Luzon and may enter PAR by Monday morning or afternoon.
Saudel Remains Outside PAR
As of 10:00 AM, the eye of Typhoon Saudel was estimated at 2,085 km east of Extreme Northern Luzon, still outside PAR.
Saudel currently has maximum sustained winds of 165 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 205 km/h.
The typhoon is moving west northwestward at 25 km/h, while strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 520 km from its center.
May Become a Super Typhoon Before Entering PAR
PAGASA forecasts Saudel to reach Super Typhoon category by Monday, August 24, before its expected entry into PAR.
After reaching its peak intensity, the tropical cyclone is expected to gradually weaken. However, PAGASA said the possibility that Saudel could enter PAR while still at Super Typhoon strength cannot be ruled out.
Saudel is forecast to enter the northeastern boundary of PAR by Monday morning or afternoon.
What Will Saudel Be Called in the Philippines?
Another Tropical Depression located east of Southern Luzon is also being monitored outside PAR, and PAGASA said the possibility of this system entering PAR has not been ruled out.
Because both tropical cyclones could enter PAR, Saudel will receive the domestic name Obet or Pilandok, depending on which system enters the country’s monitoring area first.
Current Forecast Keeps Saudel Over the Philippine Sea
Based on PAGASA’s current forecast track, Saudel is expected to remain over the Philippine Sea and exit PAR by Tuesday, August 25.
However, PAGASA cautioned that a more westward track beyond 48 hours could cause the typhoon to remain within PAR beyond Tuesday.
Despite its expected entry into PAR, Saudel is currently less likely to directly affect the country’s weather and sea conditions within the next three days.
The public is advised to continue monitoring succeeding advisories as the typhoon’s track and intensity forecast may change.
Unless an intermediate advisory is issued, PAGASA’s next Tropical Cyclone Advisory for Saudel will be released at 11:00 PM today.
