Tropical Depression Maymay Forms West of La Union; Benguet Under Signal No. 1

The low-pressure area west of La Union developed into Tropical Depression Maymay late Tuesday, August 4, 2026, according to the tropical cyclone advisory issued by PAGASA at 11:00 PM.

The center of Maymay was estimated at 130 kilometers west northwest of Bacnotan, La Union.

The tropical depression had maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

PAGASA listed Maymay as moving east northeastward at 10 kilometers per hour. Its track outlook, however, indicated that the system may remain nearly stationary during the next 12 hours before moving eastward toward Northern Luzon.

Maymay may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union on Wednesday afternoon or evening, August 5.

What This Means for Baguio City and Benguet

The province of Benguet is under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.

Signal No. 1 means winds ranging from 39 to 61 kilometers per hour may be experienced within approximately 36 hours. Intermittent rain may also occur during this period.

PAGASA said minimal to minor impacts from strong winds are possible in areas under Signal No. 1.

Baguio City was not separately named in the list of areas under the wind signal in the supplied advisory. However, the city may still experience rain and strong wind gusts because of its location within the Benguet highlands and the expected effects of Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon over most of Luzon.

After making landfall, Maymay is expected to weaken while crossing the mountainous terrain of Northern and Central Luzon.

It may weaken into a tropical depression by Thursday morning, August 6, and could be downgraded further into a low-pressure area by Thursday afternoon or evening.

Possible Landfall Over Ilocos Sur or La Union

Maymay is forecast to remain nearly stationary during the next 12 hours before beginning to move eastward.

Based on PAGASA’s track outlook, the center of the tropical cyclone may make landfall over Ilocos Sur or La Union on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

After landfall, Maymay is expected to cross portions of Northern and Central Luzon until Thursday.

PAGASA emphasized that the track may still shift within the forecast confidence cone.

Heavy rainfall and severe winds may also affect places outside the projected landfall area and forecast path.

Heavy Rainfall Remains a Major Concern

PAGASA referred the public to Weather Advisory No. 13 for the detailed heavy rainfall outlook associated with Maymay and the Southwest Monsoon.

Gale Warning Over Western Northern Luzon

A Gale Warning is in effect over the western seaboard of Northern Luzon.

Very rough seas with waves reaching up to 4.5 meters are expected over:

• Ilocos Sur
• La Union
• Pangasinan

Sea travel is considered dangerous for vessels of all types and sizes.

All mariners are advised to remain in port. Vessels already at sea should seek shelter or proceed to a safe harbor as soon as possible.

Rough Seas Expected in Other Areas

Waves reaching up to 3.5 meters are expected over:

• Seaboard of Zambales
• Eastern seaboard of Bataan
• Eastern seaboard of Lubang Island

Waves reaching up to three meters are expected over:

• Northern seaboard of Batanes
• Eastern seaboard of Davao Oriental

Small vessels, including motorbancas, should not venture out to sea under these conditions.

Moderate to rough seas with waves reaching two to 2.5 meters are also expected over several coastal areas in Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.

Operators of motorbancas and similarly sized vessels should take precautionary measures and avoid sailing whenever possible.
