Life-threatening conditions persist over the northern portion of Northern Luzon as Super Typhoon Nando passes very close to Babuyan Island.

Current Status

As of 2:00 PM, the eye of Super Typhoon Nando was over the coastal waters of Babuyan Island, Calayan, Cagayan (19.4°N, 121.9°E). It has maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 295 km/h, and is moving westward at 25 km/h. Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 600 km from the center.

Heavy Rainfall Outlook

Heavy to torrential rains are expected over parts of Northern and Central Luzon. These conditions may trigger flash floods and landslides, especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible.

Severe Winds

  • Extreme impacts from typhoon-force winds possible within Signal No. 5 areas.
  • Significant to severe impacts within Signal No. 4.
  • Moderate to significant impacts within Signal No. 3.
  • Minor to moderate impacts within Signal No. 2.

High risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3.0 m within 24 hours over low-lying or exposed coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur.

Track and Intensity Outlook

  • The center of Nando is currently passing very close to Babuyan Island and will pass very close or make landfall over Calayan Island between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM today.
  • On the forecast track, Nando may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tomorrow (Sept. 23) morning.
  • Nando may maintain its strength or further intensify before its close approach to Babuyan Islands.
