Total Lunar Eclipse to Grace Philippine Skies on September 7–8, 2025

A breathtaking celestial event is set to unfold this September. On the night of September 7 until the early morning of September 8, 2025, a Total Lunar Eclipse will be visible in the Philippines, lasting for 1 hour, 22 minutes, and 54 seconds at totality.

According to a press release from . , .., Administrator of PAGASA, this eclipse will be completely visible across East Africa, Asia, and Australia, giving millions of skywatchers the chance to witness the Moon take on a dramatic reddish hue often referred to as a “Blood Moon.”

Eclipse Timeline (Philippine Standard Time)

  • 11:27 PM, September 7 – Penumbral phase begins
  • 12:27 AM, September 8 – Partial lunar eclipse begins
  • 1:30 AM – Moon enters totality
  • 2:12 AM – Maximum eclipse
  • 2:53 AM – Total eclipse ends, partial phase resumes
  • 3:57 AM – Partial lunar eclipse ends
  • 4:57 AM – Penumbral eclipse ends

At the peak, the Earth’s umbral shadow will cover the Moon completely, producing the spectacular deep red appearance.

Why the Moon Turns Red

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. Instead, sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters shorter wavelengths like blue and green while bending longer wavelengths such as red and orange. These warmer tones are projected onto the lunar surface, giving the Moon its haunting “Blood Moon” glow.

Viewing the Eclipse

Unlike solar eclipses, a lunar eclipse is completely safe to watch with the naked eye. No special equipment is required, although binoculars or small telescopes will enhance the view of the Moon’s surface and its gradual transformation.

The Moon will be positioned high overhead during the event, making it an excellent spectacle across the Philippines—weather permitting. Stargazers are encouraged to head to open spaces with clear skies and minimal light pollution for the best experience.

A Rare Opportunity

Total lunar eclipses do not occur often in a given location. This makes the September 2025 eclipse a must-see opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts, night-sky photographers, and casual observers alike.

So, mark your calendars and prepare to witness one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events—the Blood Moon of September 7–8, 2025.
