PH Ranks 50th in the Global Innovation Index, It’s Our Country’s Best Rank Ever




Six years ago, in 2014, the Philippines ranked 100th in the Global Innovation Index (GII) ranking. And by 2018 the Philippines ranked 73rd and it went up 19 notches by 2019, ranking 54th.

Furthermore, for this year, among the 131 economies, our country has climbed up another four notches, landing at the 50th rank.

This news has been announced by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato de la Peña on Wednesday afternoon, September 2, 2020, saying that our country’s rank for the Global Innovation Index 2020 is the Philippines’ best rank ever.

“At the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), we consider this as major news because it can be considered as a testament that DOST’s efforts in spearheading science, technology, and innovation are bearing fruits.”

The Importance of the Global Innovation Index Ranking

The GII is a leading reference on innovation and a “tool for action” for economies that incorporate the GII into their innovation agenda. World economies are ranked by the GII according to their innovation capabilities.

The GII rankings are determined based on the following pillars:

  • Creative Outputs
  • Institutions
  • Human Capital and Research
  • Infrastructure
  • Market Sophistication
  • Business Sophistication
  • Knowledge and Technology Outputs

Why is the GII Ranking Important in the first place?
