The first typhoon for this year has already entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). As of 11:00 AM today, May 11, 2020, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a typhoon alert on the Tropical Depression “Ambo” which is valid until their next bulletin to be released later at 11:00 PM.
The Tropical Depression Ambo has slightly intensified while moving slowly westward over the Philippine Sea with maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, according to the forecast.
As of 10:00 AM today, the center of the tropical depression, as estimated based on all available data, is at 340 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.
The trough of the tropical depression Ambo will bring scattered light to moderate with isolated heavy rains during thunderstorms over Mindanao in the next Twenty Four hours (24 hrs). Eastern seaboards of Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental, on the other hand, will experience moderate to rough seas.
Moreover, based on the forecast at 11:00 AM today, raising of tropical cyclone wind signal in any locality of the country remains less likely in the next 24 hours.

Looking back, a total of twenty-one (21) tropical cyclones hit the country last year without any Super Typhoons being recorded. The first tropical depression recorded by PAGASA in 2019 came as early as January while the last one hit the Philippines in December.
