The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially announced the start of the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, in the country. The declaration was made after several days of persistent low-level southwesterly winds affecting the western section of Luzon and the presence of a frontal system over Extreme Northern Luzon.
PAGASA’s recent weather analysis noted the weakening of Easterlies—typically warm and dry winds from the Pacific—and the growing influence of the southwesterly flow. These conditions are consistent with the typical patterns that signal the transition to the monsoon season in the Philippines.
According to PAGASA Administrator Dr. Nathaniel T. Servando, these developments are precursors to the onset of the rainy season, which is expected to occur within the next two weeks, especially over the western parts of the country.
