Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake Jolts Baguio City and Parts of North Luzon

PhiVolcs reduced the initial reading to Magnitude 4.4 from Magnitude 4.8 with a depth of 012 km and its epicenter located at 16.34°N, 120.42°E – 005 km N 70° W of Pugo (La Union)

    A magnitude 4.8 tectonic earthquake struck near Pugo, La Union at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, shaking parts of Northern Luzon including Baguio City, La Union, Pangasinan, and Mountain Province, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

    Epicenter and Depth

    The earthquake’s epicenter was recorded at 16.34°N, 120.47°E, approximately 2 kilometers north-northeast of Pugo, La Union, with a depth of 10 kilometers. PHIVOLCS classified the origin of the tremor as tectonic, indicating that it was caused by the movement of geological faults in the area.

    Reported Intensities

    Based on instrumental intensity reports, the following areas experienced varying degrees of shaking:

    • Intensity V – City of Baguio

    • Intensity III – Aringay, La Union; Bontoc, Mountain Province; Sison, Pangasinan

    • Intensity II – San Fernando, La Union; Nampicuan, Nueva Ecija; City of Dagupan

    • Intensity I – Lingayen and Urdaneta, Pangasinan

    The earthquake was strong enough to be felt by residents in Baguio City, with light to moderate shaking lasting several seconds. Some people reported swaying of hanging objects and minor rattling of windows.

    Damage and Aftershock Assessment

    PHIVOLCS stated that damage is possible due to the recorded intensity in Baguio City and nearby areas. However, as of this report, no aftershocks are expected and no major structural damage or injuries have been reported.

    Authorities remind the public to remain alert for possible after-reports and to inspect homes and establishments for any signs of damage, particularly in areas that experienced Intensity IV or higher.
