Baguio City Welcomes the Yuletide Season with a Magical Christmas Tree Lighting and the 16th SLU Lantern Parade
Every year, the heart of Baguio City beats louder with excitement as the Christmas season unfolds with two of its most anticipated events: the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the SLU Lantern Parade. This year was no different, as residents and tourists flocked to witness a celebration of equal parts tradition, artistry, and joy.
An Enchanting Prelude to the Holidays
The festivities began promptly at 4:00 PM with the harmonious voices of the UB Voices Chorale filling the air with classic Christmas carols. Adding to the magic, the Saint Louis University (SLU) Symphonic Band serenaded the crowd with enchanting melodies, while the SLU Marching Band energized the atmosphere with their rhythmic drumbeats.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, anticipation buzzed among the crowd. The countdown to the lighting of the Christmas tree began, heightening the excitement of everyone gathered.
Lighting of the Christmas Tree: A Sacred Tribute
This year’s Christmas tree was more than a festive centerpiece; it was a masterpiece blending art, faith, and tradition. Inspired by the grandeur of stained glass windows in churches, the tree depicted the sacred story of the Nativity, adding a spiritual touch to the city’s holiday celebration.
As the tree’s vibrant lights illuminated the night sky, the audience was treated to a spectacular fireworks display from SM City Baguio. The colorful pyrotechnics framed the tree, symbolizing hope and unity. This moment also marked the start of another cherished tradition: the SLU Lantern Parade.
16th SLU Lantern Parade: A Spectacle of Creativity and Competition
The 16th SLU Lantern Parade, which started as a humble school event, has grown to become one of Baguio’s most awaited Christmas traditions. This year, participants from various departments of Saint Louis University dazzled the audience with their creativity and dedication.
The Basic Education School emerged as the overall champion, earning recognition for their artistry and innovation. Their performance also earned them the Ecolantern Innovation Award and several other accolades, including Best in Field Performance and Best Rhythmic Accompaniment.
Meanwhile, the School of Nursing, Allied Health, and Biological Sciences dominated the minor awards, claiming honors for Best in Street Performance, Most Disciplined Group, Most Colorful Group, and Best in Illumination. Their vibrant lanterns and captivating performances added layers of charm to the parade.
The School of Medicine, known for their ingenuity, secured the 2nd Runner-Up titles for both the overall competition and field performance, completing the roster of winners who made this year’s parade unforgettable.
A Celebration of Light, Unity, and Hope
The Christmas Tree Lighting and SLU Lantern Parade embody the essence of Baguio City’s holiday spirit—a celebration that bridges generations unites communities, and fills hearts with joy.
These traditions remind us that Christmas is more than lights and festivities. It is about faith, love, and the promise of hope. As the vibrant lanterns made their way through the city and the Christmas tree glowed with sacred inspiration, one could feel the collective heartbeat of a city that cherishes its people, culture, and traditions.
This year’s events left an indelible mark on everyone who witnessed them, proving once again that Baguio is not just the City of Pines—it is a city where the warmth of community shines brightest, even in the chill of December.
