4 Million Filipinos Unemployed in January 2021





According to the Philippine Statistics Authority’s (PSA) January 2021 Labor Force Survey (LFS) which was released today, March 9, 2021 (Tuesday), about four (4) Million Filipinos who are 15-year-old and over were unemployed in January 2021.

Last January 2020, PSA has reported that 2.4 Million Filipinos were unemployed.

The unemployment rate in the Philippines in January 2021 is 8.7% while the unemployment rate in January 2020 is 5.3%.

Furthermore, the unemployment rate in January 2021 is the same as the rate recorded in October 2020. And, this is the lowest rate since April 2020 according to PSA.

  • Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR): 6.3 %
  • Region I (Ilocos Region): 9.3 %
  • Region II (Cagayan Valley): 6.0 %
  • Region III (Central Luzon): 8.5 %
  • Region IV-A (CALABARZON): 13.1 %
  • MIMAROPA Region:9.3 %
  • Region V (Bicol Region): 11.3 %
  • Region VI (Western Visayas): 9.1 %
  • Region VII (Central Visayas): 7.1 %
  • Region VIII (Estern Visayas): 7.6 %
  • Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula): 3.6 %
  • Region X (Northern Mindanao): 7.1 %
  • Region XI (Davao Region): 5.4 %
  • Region XII (SOCCSKASARGEN): 6.8 %
  • Region XIII (Caraga): 9.0 %
  • Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM): 7.6 %

According to PSA, unemployment rates in seven areas in PH were reportedly higher than the national estimate of 8.7 percent in January 2021.

Furthermore, CALABARZON, 13.2 peercent, and Bicol Region, 11.3 percent, reported double-digit unemployment rates.  And, these regions were reported to have more than ten unemployed persons for every 100 persons in the labor force.

In addition, according to PSA, the employment rate in January 2021 is at 91.3 percent, the same as the rate recorded in October 2020, and this means that 41.2 million Filipinos were employed out of 45.2 million Filipinos in the labor force in January 2021.
