Urban Farmers Month: Agriculture Fair 2019

In celebration of the Urban Farmers Month, a 15-day Agriculture Fair is now being held at the Igorot Park, Baguio City. 44 participants from different parts of the city are given the opportunity to exhibit their organically produced agricultural crops from May 15 to 31, 2019.

The said event is made possible through the collaboration of the following:

  • City Agriculture Division
  • City Council Committee on Market, Trade, Commerce and Agriculture
  • Agriculture department
  • Organic agriculture practitioners from the different parts of the city

Urban Farmers Month Celebration in Baguio City

The local government of Baguio has come up with Resolution No. 75, series of 2017 to celebrate the important role of organic farming practitioners in the growth and development of the city. Thus, May was declared as Urban Farmers Month.

Also, under Ordinance No. 35, series of 2018, the local government should allot the amount of PHP300,000.00 from the annual budget for the activities that will be organized in line with the celebration of the Urban Farmers Month every May.

Annual Agriculture Fair

Every year, Agriculture Fair is being held as part of the month-long celebration along with other activities being organized.

According to Committee Chair, outgoing Councilor Leandro B. Yangot, Jr., various booths are now showcasing products like organic vegetables, herbal plants and processed orgasmic fruits, and vegetables from the participating agriculture industry stakeholders at this year’s fair.

“We invite the public to visit the booths that have been erected at the Igorot Park for them to appreciate the fresh and processed products of our organic agriculture practitioners from the different barangays. The conduct of the annual Agriculture Fair is our simple contribution to the sustainable growth of the organic agriculture industry of the city,” Councilor Yangot said.

Advocacy on Urban Gardening

Yangot also encourages residents to make use of their available spaces to create their own urban gardens in order to help improve food production and partly beautify the city’s environment. By doing so, they will be able to in enhance the air quality around the city, especially in the central business district area.
