Tropical Storm Maymay Places Benguet Under Wind Signals, Baguio Prepares for Strong Winds
Baguio City and the wider Benguet province are bracing for the effects of Tropical Storm Maymay (international name: Kujira), as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued Tropical Cyclone Bulletin No. 7 at 5:00 PM on August 5, 2026.
As of 4:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Storm Maymay was estimated approximately 145 km West of Sinait, Ilocos Sur, located at 17.8°N, 119.1°E. The storm maintains its strength with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 90 km/h, accompanied by a central pressure of 996 hPa. Maymay is currently moving North Northeastward at a speed of 10 km/h, with strong to gale-force winds extending outwards up to 180 km from its center.
PAGASA’s forecast indicates that by 2:00 AM on August 6, 2026, Maymay is expected to be over the coastal waters of Vigan, Ilocos Sur, maintaining its tropical storm intensity. By 2:00 PM on the same day, the storm is projected to be over the coastal waters of Palanan, Isabela, potentially weakening to a low-pressure area.
Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals in Effect for Benguet
Residents and visitors in Benguet are urged to take necessary precautions, as various parts of the province are under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS):
- TCWS No. 2: This signal is in effect for the northwestern portion of Benguet, specifically covering Mankayan, Kapangan, Kibungan, Sablan, Bakun, La Trinidad, Tublay, Atok, and Buguias. Areas under TCWS No. 2 can expect gale-force winds ranging from 62 to 88 km/h within 24 hours, posing a minor to moderate threat to life and property.
- TCWS No. 1: The rest of Benguet, including Baguio City, is under TCWS No. 1. This means strong winds ranging from 39 to 61 km/h are expected within 36 hours, presenting a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Beyond wind threats, PAGASA has also issued Weather Advisory No. 16 for a heavy rainfall outlook associated with Tropical Storm Maymay. Residents should prepare for potential heavy rains and related hazards such as flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous areas.
