PHIVOLCS: Weak Steam Observed from Taal Volcano

A weak steaming activity has been observed from vents on the main crater of the Taal Volcano, rising twenty (20) meters high. The Taal Volcano Network has also recorded five (5) volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.

This is based on the Taal Volcano Bulletin released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) at 8:00 AM today, August 18, 2020.

Taal Volcano at Alert Level 1

Taal Volcano has maintained to be at Alert Level 1 (Abnormal). What may come up with this alert level? Here are what may occur and threaten areas within the Taal Volcano Island (TVI) according to PHIVOLCS:

  • sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions
  • volcanic earthquakes
  • minor ashfall
  • lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas

PHIVOLCS suggests that entry into TVI and Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must remain strictly prohibited.

While PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Taal Volcano’s activity, people are advised to observe precautions due to ground displacement across fissures, minor earthquakes, and even possible ashfall.
