Residents welcome Rev. Rafael T. Cruz as the new Catholic Bishop of Baguio City
Rev. Fr. Rafael Tambao-an Cruz was officially appointed by Pope Francis as the new Bishop of Baguio on June 20, 2024. Born in Pangasinan, Fr. Cruz holds degrees in Philosophy, Theology, and Clinical Psychology, with pastoral experience spanning numerous roles, including parish priest, spiritual director, and professor. His leadership approach is inspired by the biblical story of King Solomon, frequently asking for wisdom and an understanding heart in his service.
Today, September 17, 2024, Fr. Cruz will be formally installed as the third bishop of Baguio at a solemn ceremony held at the Baguio Cathedral of Our Lady of Atonement. The day begins with a civic reception at the Porta Vaga Sky Zone, followed by the installation and Eucharistic celebration at 9 a.m. Bishop Cruz succeeds the late Bishop Carlito J. Cenzon and Bishop Victor Bendico, stepping into a significant role of spiritual guidance for the diocese.
Throughout his career, Fr. Cruz has held various positions, including serving on the Presbyteral Council and the Permanent Committee for the Protection of Minors. His commitment to spiritual care, paired with his expertise in psychology, has made him a respected figure in both pastoral and academic settings. As Baguio’s new bishop, he seeks the prayers of the faithful, promising to lead with compassion, wisdom, and humility, reflecting Christ as the Good Shepherd to his flock.
