Protect Your Facebook Account: 6 Tips to Prevent Hacking

In today’s digital age, social media platforms like Facebook have become a part of our daily lives. We use them to connect with friends and family, share pictures and videos, and even conduct business transactions. However, with the increase in online activity, there has also been a rise in cybercrime. One of the most common cybercrimes is hacking, and Facebook is not immune to it. In this article, we will discuss some tips on how to prevent hacking on Facebook.

Use a Strong Password

The first and foremost step to secure your Facebook account is to use a strong password. Your password should be at least eight characters long and should include a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using personal information such as your name, birthdate, or address as your password, as these can be easily guessed.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your Facebook account. Once enabled, you will be required to enter a code sent to your registered phone number or email address before logging in to your account. This ensures that even if someone manages to guess your password, they will not be able to log in without access to your phone or email.

How to turn on Two-Factor Authentication of Facebook

  • Step 1: Go to Your Facebook Settings
    • First, log in to your Facebook account and navigate to the top right-hand corner of the page. Click on the down arrow to open the drop-down menu, and then click on “Settings & Privacy” and then “Settings.”
  • Step 2: Select Security and Login
    • On the left-hand side of the screen, click on “Security and Login.” This will take you to the security settings page for your Facebook account.
  • Step 3: Enable Two-Factor Authentication
    • Scroll down to the “Two-Factor Authentication” section and click on “Edit.” You will then be prompted to choose a security method.
  • Step 4: Choose Your Security Method
    • Facebook offers two options for two-factor authentication: text message (SMS) or authentication app. Choose the method that you prefer, and follow the on-screen instructions to set it up.
      • If you choose the text message (SMS) option, you will be asked to enter your mobile phone number. Facebook will then send a verification code to your phone, which you will need to enter to complete the setup process.
      • If you choose the authentication app option, you will be asked to download an authentication app such as Google Authenticator or Duo Mobile. Once you have downloaded the app, you will need to scan a QR code provided by Facebook to link the app to your account. The app will then generate a unique security code every time you log in to your Facebook account.
  • Step 5: Confirm Your Two-Factor Authentication Settings
    • Once you have chosen your security method and completed the setup process, you will be taken back to the Two-Factor Authentication settings page. Here, you can review your settings and make any necessary changes.

That’s it! Your Facebook account is now secured with two-factor authentication, which adds an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access. Remember to keep your mobile phone or authentication app secure, and never share your login credentials with anyone.

Be Wary of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams are a common way hackers steal sensitive information from unsuspecting users. Be cautious of suspicious, links, messages or emails that ask for your login credentials or other personal information. Always check the sender’s email address and verify the authenticity of the message before clicking on any links or providing any information. Think before you click.

Limit Third-Party App Access

Third-party apps often require access to your Facebook account to function correctly. However, it’s crucial to limit access to only the apps that you trust. You can review and manage the apps that have access to your account in the Settings menu under “Apps and Websites.”

Log Out of Unused Devices

If you log in to your Facebook account from a shared device or a friend’s computer, make sure to log out properly when you’re done. Failure to do so can allow someone else to access your account without your knowledge.

Keep Your Device Updated

Keep your device updated with the latest security patches and software updates. This will ensure that your device is protected against known vulnerabilities and will make it more difficult for hackers to gain access to your account.

Facebook has become an essential part of our daily lives, and it’s essential to take steps to secure our accounts. By following the tips discussed above, you can significantly reduce the risk of hacking on Facebook. Remember, prevention is always better than cure when it comes to online security.
