Philippine Airlines to Suspend Baguio-Cebu-Baguio on July 1, 2024

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has announced the suspension of its Baguio-Cebu-Baguio routes, effective July 1, 2024, just a year and a half after inaugurating the service on December 16, 2022. The airline cited “route network adjustments” as the reason behind this decision. Further, they have stated that any passengers who were affected by the suspension of flights will be assisted by the management. However, the term has sparked speculation among travelers and aviation enthusiasts.

Many online commentators believe the suspension results from poor passenger traffic. They argue that “route network adjustments” is an ambiguous explanation that avoids addressing the core issue.

Baguio City officials have provided a different reason for the suspension, attributing it to the onset of the rainy season, which has led to numerous flight cancellations. They anticipate that flights will resume once the rainy season has ended.

In a move that has added to the confusion, other sources reveal that Baguio City officials are open to other carriers starting operations in Baguio following PAL’s suspension announcement. This has led to questions about the true reasons behind the route suspension and the future of air travel in and out of Baguio.

The conflicting statements from PAL and Baguio City officials have fueled debate on social media. Many users point out that if the rainy season was the primary concern, similar suspensions should have occurred during the 2023 rainy season. Others highlight the lack of confirmation from PAL regarding the resumption of flights after the rainy season, as confidently stated by city officials.

The suspension of the Baguio-Cebu-Baguio route leaves travelers and stakeholders in a state of uncertainty, with many awaiting clearer communication from both PAL and Baguio City officials. As the rainy season progresses, the travel community remains hopeful for a resolution and clearer skies ahead.

For now, travelers are advised to monitor official announcements for any updates on the resumption of flights and alternative travel options.
