If passed, this law will require commercial and manufacturing firms to collect and recycle plastics

Baguio City Congressman Mark Go has filed a bill that will require commercial and manufacturing companies to collect, recover, dispose or recycle plastic wastes and other non-biodegradable materials.

House Bill 6180

House Bill 6180 holds the different manufacturing companies and commercial establishments that use plastics and other non-biodegradable accountable materials accountable by making them collect and recover used plastics and non-biodegradable wastes and consider it part of the corporate social responsibility.

The Process

If the bill is approved the different commercial establishments like food chains, office buildings, retails buildings and supermarkets will collect the used plastic from their customers before turning it over to the manufacturer for recycling or disposal.

The Basis of the Law

Congressman Mark Go cited the 10-year National Solid Waste Management Status Report which stated that 38 percent of the solid wastes are composed of plastics. The Congressman also mentioned that although RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2001 is in effect, there is still a need for stronger efforts to possibly utilizing plastic materials and solid wastes.
