6.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Near Dalupiri Island






A significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale jolted areas near Dalupiri Island (Calayan, Cagayan) earlier this evening. The quake occurred at 7:03:16 PM, according to the latest bulletin issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The quake’s epicenter was pinpointed approximately 26 km NW of Dalupiri Island, with coordinates registered at 19.31°N, 121.09°E. The tectonic disturbance had a depth of focus of 10 km.

Areas including Sinait in ILOCOS SUR reported a shaking intensity of IV, while instrumental intensities showed Intensity IV in Aparri, Gonzaga, CAGAYAN, and Laoag City in ILOCOS NORTE. Other areas such as Penablanca in CAGAYAN, and Vigan City in ILOCOS SUR experienced Intensity III. Further regions like Ilagan in ISABELA felt Intensity II, and places such as Casiguran in AURORA and various locations in ILOCOS SUR, including Candon, Narvacan, and Tagudin, recorded Intensity I.

Despite the quake’s strength, the good news for residents and authorities is that there’s no expected damage linked to this seismic event. However, PHIVOLCS warns of potential aftershocks in the coming hours or days. As always, the public is advised to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols during such natural occurrences.

Civil Defense Cordillera reminded the public to stay calm and alert at the same time. When shaking is felt, do the Duck-Cover-Hold and stay away from objects that may easily fall or break.
