6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Batangas, Felt Across Multiple Cities

Epicenter and Origin

Manila, June 15, 2023 – At 10:19:24 AM local time, a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the area 15 km South West of Calatagan, Batangas, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). The epicenter was located at 13.77°N, 120.51°E, with a depth of focus estimated at 119 km.

The earthquake’s origin was identified as tectonic, a common cause for earthquakes in the archipelagic country located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The tectonic activity induces frequent seismic and volcanic events.

Intensities Recorded Across Regions

The quake was felt at varying intensities across numerous regions. PHIVOLCS reported an Intensity IV in multiple areas including the City of Manila, Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Valenzuela, and the City of Malolos in Bulacan. Several cities in Batangas and Cavite, as well as Tanay in Rizal, also reported the same intensity.

Intensity III was recorded in cities like Las Piñas, Makati, Marikina, Parañaque, Pasig, and Obando in Bulacan, among others. Intensity II was felt in cities including Caloocan, San Juan, Muntinlupa, and various areas in La Union, Pangasinan, Bulacan, and Tarlac. The least intensity, Intensity I, was recorded in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

Instrumental Intensities and Affected Areas

Instrumental intensities, which are readings captured by installed intensity-measuring equipment, also reported varying degrees of seismic activity from Intensity I to IV in numerous areas including Bataan, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite, Mindoro, Metro Manila, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Quezon, Rizal, Tarlac, and Zambales.

Authorities are bracing for expected aftershocks and have cautioned citizens to prepare for possible repercussions. Given the magnitude of the earthquake, damages to infrastructure and personal properties are expected, although the full extent of these damages remains to be assessed.

Response and Preparedness Measures

Local government units and disaster response agencies are currently coordinating efforts to address any emergent needs and assess the overall impact of the earthquake on their respective areas.

PHIVOLCS continues to closely monitor seismic activity and provides regular updates to ensure public safety. They have reiterated their call for everyone to be mindful of structural integrity, to follow established safety protocols, and to stay calm during aftershocks.

Public Encouraged to Stay Informed

In the wake of this significant seismic event, the public is encouraged to stay informed and ready for any possible scenarios as local and national agencies continue to evaluate and respond to the situation.
