Meta Unveils Twitter Challenger “Threads”; Here’s a Step-by-Step Guide to Setting Up Your Threads Account

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has launched a new social media platform called “Threads,” aimed at competing directly with Twitter. Announced by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, on July 6, 2023, Threads emerges as an independent but integrated part of the Instagram platform.

“Let’s do this. Welcome to Threads,” wrote Zuckerberg in his inaugural post, underlining the company’s ambitions for this exciting new venture.

Threads: Breaking Down the Basics

An extension of the Instagram platform, Threads uses your information from both Instagram and Threads to enhance your experiences through personalized ads.

The launch is seen as Meta’s contribution to the burgeoning “fediverse”, a decentralized network of independent yet interconnected social platforms such as Mastodon, that puts emphasis on user control and privacy. Future versions of Threads will feature integration with the fediverse, offering a unique blend of traditional social media and a new, open, decentralized model.

In its current form, Threads is designed for sharing text updates and facilitating public conversations. You can easily log in using your Instagram credentials. Posts on Threads can reach up to 500 characters, supporting links, photos, and videos up to five minutes long.

Threads is being rolled out in over 100 countries for both iOS and Android platforms. Users in these countries can download the app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Setting Up Your Threads Profile: A Step-by-Step Guide

Getting started with Threads is simple, given its deep integration with Instagram.

  1. Download the Threads app. Download the Threads App for Android or iOS.
  2. Log in Using Instagram: Use your existing Instagram account to log in. Your Instagram username and verification status will automatically carry over, and you’ll have the option to customize your Threads profile as you see fit.

  3. Age Verification: Choose whether you want a public or a private profile. For users under 16 (or under 18 in certain countries), private profiles will be the default setting.
  4. Following and Discovering Users: You can follow the same accounts as you do on Instagram, and Threads also helps you discover new creators based on your interests.
  5. Your Threads profile is now ready!

  6. Posting on Threads: Posts on Threads can be up to 500 characters long, and can include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes long. Sharing your Threads posts to your Instagram stories or other platforms is a breeze.
  7. Controlling Interactions: Threads comes with several tools to foster positive interactions and tune out the noise. You can control who can mention you or reply to you and filter replies to your threads that contain specific words. Unfollowing, blocking, restricting, or reporting a profile on Threads is as easy as tapping the three-dot menu.

Threads plans to integrate with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol, which will allow users to migrate their content to other services if they choose to stop using Threads. Moreover, users of compatible apps will be able to interact with Threads users without needing a Threads account and vice versa. This means that if you have a public profile on Threads, your posts could potentially be accessible from other apps, amplifying your reach with no additional effort. On the other hand, users with private profiles can moderate who gets to follow and interact with their content, maintaining their privacy.

This decentralized approach to social networking, akin to the protocols governing email and the web itself, is considered by Meta to be a significant player in the future of online platforms. Threads is Meta’s first endeavor towards compatibility with an open social networking protocol, and it is hoped that by becoming part of this rapidly evolving ecosystem of interoperable services, Threads will help users find their community, irrespective of the app they use.

By offering a fresh take on text-based communication and engagement, Threads aims to extend Instagram’s reach beyond photos and videos, fostering a more diverse and vibrant online community. As Threads charts its journey in the ever-evolving social media landscape, it remains to be seen how it will shake up the status quo.
