Is Kennon Road Open? December 24, 2023

In a significant development for travelers and residents alike, the Metropolitan Baguio City – La Trinidad – Itogon – Sablan – Tuba – Tublay Development Authority (MBLISSTDA) has announced the reopening of the iconic Kennon Road. This vital artery, connecting various key areas, is now accessible to both public and private vehicles, effective from December 24, 2023. Here’s everything you need to know about this latest development:

Accessibility for Light Vehicles

Kennon Road is now open to light vehicles, both public and private, with a weight limit of 10 tons. This includes UV Express vehicles servicing the Baguio-Rosario route. However, operators of other UV Express services are advised to use alternative routes. This decision aims to ensure smooth traffic flow and enhance safety on this historically significant road.

Speed Limit Regulations

For the safety of all road users, a maximum speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour (kph) has been set. This measure is crucial in navigating the winding and often challenging terrain of Kennon Road, known for its steep inclines and sharp curves. Adherence to this speed limit is mandatory and will be strictly enforced to prevent accidents and ensure a safe journey for all.

No Parking Policy

In line with traffic management and road safety, parking along Kennon Road is strictly prohibited. The local governments of Baguio City and Tuba, in coordination with the respective city and municipal police offices, will undertake anti-illegal parking activities. This policy aims to maintain unobstructed traffic flow and prevent any potential hazards that parked vehicles might cause.

Traffic Management and Human Resource Complement

To manage traffic effectively, especially in one-lane portions of the road, a 24-hour human resource complement will be provided. This team, assured by the concerned project contractors through the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR), will direct traffic and assist in maintaining order and safety on the road.

Safety Protocols During Adverse Conditions

The reopening comes with a critical safety caveat. In the event of inclement weather, imminent weather disturbances, ground shaking, or earthquakes, Kennon Road will be subject to immediate closure upon the recommendation of DPWH-CAR. This protocol is in place to ensure the safety of all travelers and prevent accidents during hazardous conditions.

Conclusion

The reopening of Kennon Road marks a significant milestone in the region’s infrastructure development. It not only enhances connectivity but also promises a boost to the local economy, especially in terms of tourism and trade. However, the safety and well-being of the travelers remain paramount. Adherence to the set conditions and regulations is essential for a safe and enjoyable journey along this historic and scenic route.
