Baguio City Holy Week 2025: A Visita Iglesia to Inspire Faith and Reflection

Holy Week in Baguio City is a time of solemn reflection, prayer, and rich tradition. One of the most meaningful practices observed by the faithful during this season is the Visita Iglesia or the visitation of seven churches, typically done on Maundy Thursday. This practice allows pilgrims to meditate on the Seven Last Words of Jesus and offers a unique spiritual journey through the city’s most beloved places of worship.

1. Our Lady of Atonement Cathedral (Baguio Cathedral)

Location: Upper Session Road, Baguio City
Start your pilgrimage at the iconic Baguio Cathedral, known for its stunning twin spires, rose-colored facade, and hilltop view overlooking Session Road. The Cathedral is a central hub for Holy Week liturgies and offers confession and Stations of the Cross throughout the day.

6. Kapilya nina Jesus at Maria

Location: Lourdes Subdivision Extension, Baguio City

It provides a serene, neighborhood-centered space for intimate prayer and devotion. Within the same compound lies the Lourdes Grotto, a revered pilgrimage site for those seeking healing and solace, and the Mirador Jesuit Villa Retreat House, which offers a tranquil and scenic location for spiritual reflection, Stations of the Cross, and meditation trails. This sacred spot is ideal for those who wish to combine Visita Iglesia with a deeper, more contemplative retreat experience.

7. Casiciaco Recoletos Seminary

Location: Asin Road, Baguio City
The idea of establishing a retreat and rest house for the Augustinian Recollects in the Philippines was first proposed in 1930. However, it was only in the postwar years that this vision became a reality. In 1952, construction began on a property in Baguio purchased from the American Jesuits. The site was formally approved as a seminary in 1953, and the community soon came to be known simply as “Casiciaco Recoletos.” On March 19, 1954, the chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Pillar was consecrated. In 1966, the Vatican officially recognized the seminary under that name. Since then, it has formed generations of Recollect missionaries and continues to serve as a quiet spiritual haven in Baguio. Its rich history, dedication to priestly formation, and scenic grounds make it a meaningful stop for pilgrims reflecting on vocation and service. This serene formation house is dedicated to the training of future Recollect priests. Its chapel, peaceful surroundings, and rich heritage make it a meaningful final stop for pilgrims, offering a chance to pray for vocations and reflect on one’s own faith journey. It reflects the missionary zeal and contemplative roots of the Recoletos.

Tips for Pilgrims:

  • Start early to avoid crowds and maximize time for reflection.
  • Bring a rosary, prayer book, and water.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • Practice silence and reverence in each church.

Whether done alone, with family, or in a group, Visita Iglesia in Baguio offers a powerful way to retrace the passion of Christ while experiencing the city’s spiritual heart. May your pilgrimage this Holy Week be filled with grace, peace, and renewed faith.
