Extremely Rare Rhino Babies Spotted in Indonesia




At the Ujung Kulon National Park, Banten Province in Indonesia, two extremely rare Javan Rhinoceros calves, one female and one male, have been spotted. The two calves were seen with their mothers from the monitoring results of almost a hundred camera traps installed at the Indonesian park between March and August.

This was announced by the Ujung Kulon National Park last September 20, 2020.

Meet the Two Rhino Babies 

The two extremely rare baby rhinos spotted in Indonesia were named Helen, the female rhino, and Luther, the male rhino.

“The birth of the Javan Rhino in Ujung Kulon National Park also confirms that the Javan Rhino population continues to experience natural breeding well, so that it continues to provide great hope for the survival of the endangered species of the Javan Rhino species,”

Director General of Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Wiratno said.

Wiratno also added that the availability of Javan Rhino food in the Ujung Kulon peninsula to support the life and behavior of Javan rhinos at present and in the future is in good capacity.

Furthermore, with the birth of the rare rhinos, the total number of Javan Rhinoceros based on the latest data provided by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is now at 74 which composes 40 males and 34 females.

Know More About the Rare Javan Rhinoceros 

Javan Rhinoceros is an extremely rare member of the Rhinocerotidae family of Rhinocerotidae one of five extant rhinoceroses. This rare rhino is also called Sunda rhinoceros or lesser one-horned rhinoceros. The horn, which only male adults have, of Javan Rhino is usually shorter than 25 cm which is smaller compared to other rhino species. 

The rhino is one of the key endangered species together with elephants, orangutans, tigers, Komodo dragons, and other flagship species as important species in the world.
