Typhoon Goring continues to maintain its strength while moving northwestward





Typhoon GORING continues to maintain its strength while moving northwestward. As of 10:00 AM, the center of the typhoon’s eye was estimated approximately 180 km East of Aparri, Cagayan (18.6°N, 123.3°E). It now has maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h near the center, with gusts reaching up to 190 km/h. The central pressure is recorded at 950 hPa. GORING is currently moving at a slow northwestward speed.

Hazards Affecting Land Areas

Heavy Rainfall:

Forecasted accumulated rainfall:

  • From today to tomorrow noon: 100-200 mm for the northeastern portion of Babuyan Islands, and 50-100 mm for Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, the northern portion of Abra, the northern portion of Apayao, and the northern and eastern portions of mainland Cagayan.
  • From tomorrow noon to Thursday noon: Greater than 200 mm for Batanes and Babuyan Islands, 100-200 mm for the northern portion of Ilocos Norte and the northwestern portion of Cagayan, and 50-100 mm for Apayao, Abra, the northern portion of Ilocos Sur, the northeastern portion of mainland Cagayan, and the rest of Ilocos Norte.

Severe Winds:

  • Areas under TCWS No.3 may experience moderate to significant impacts from storm-force winds.
  • Areas under TCWS No.2 may experience minor to moderate impacts from gale-force winds.
  • Areas under TCWS No.1 may experience minimal to minor impacts from strong winds.

Enhanced Southwest Monsoon: The enhanced Southwest Monsoon will also bring occasional or monsoon rains over the western portions of Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Visayas over the next three days.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

A Gale Warning is in effect for several seaboards in Luzon and Visayas, with disruptions in maritime activities expected due to hazardous sea conditions.

Track and Intensity Outlook

  • GORING is forecasted to follow a mainly northwestward or west-northwestward path across the Luzon Strait. The latest track forecast indicates that the typhoon may pass very close or make landfall in the vicinity of Batanes between tomorrow morning and afternoon. During this period, the typhoon is forecasted to persist in strength by the time it passes over Batanes.
  • Outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), GORING will continue its west-northwestward movement before turning more westward. It is expected to weaken as it approaches southeastern China, making landfall near Hong Kong/Pearl River Delta area on Sunday as a minimal typhoon.
