Severe Tropical Storm GORIO Enters PAR

Severe Tropical Storm GORIO (international name PODUL) has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility and is moving westward east of Extreme Northern Luzon. The weather bureau says the system is unlikely to directly affect the country in the next three days, but a southward shift could prompt wind signals in Extreme Northern Luzon.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the center of Severe Tropical Storm GORIO was located at 4:00 AM today about 1,305 kilometers east of Extreme Northern Luzon (21.1°N, 134.4°E). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h near the center, gusts of up to 135 km/h, and a central pressure of 985 hPa. It is moving west at 25 km/h, with strong to storm-force winds extending outward up to 280 kilometers from the center.

Track and Intensity Outlook

• Today (11 August): Westward movement over the Philippine Sea.
• Tomorrow (12 August) onwards: West northwestward track toward Taiwan.
• Landfall/Exit: Possible landfall over the northeastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday (13 August), exiting PAR by Wednesday evening or early Thursday (14 August).
• The weather bureau said GORIO may intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours before gradually weakening.

Hazards Affecting Land Areas

Severe Tropical Storm GORIO is unlikely to directly affect the country in the next three days. However, the state weather service warns that a further southward shift in the forecast track could result in the hoisting of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over Extreme Northern Luzon.

Hazards Affecting Coastal Waters

• Moderate seas (1.0–1.5 meters) will prevail over the coastal waters of Extreme Northern Luzon.
• Mariners of small vessels, especially motor bancas, are advised to take precautionary measures and avoid venturing out if inexperienced or operating ill-equipped boats.
