Living in a techy generation, we see and use a lot of gadgets for different purposes like doing paper works or projects, watching movies, listening to music, connecting with our family and friends here and abroad and more.

Hence, over the years, we accumulate electronic waste (e-waste), which when not properly disposed of, may be harmful to the environment and to us.

What is electronic waste?

Electronic waste includes all electronic equipment that can no longer be used as they have reached the limit of their usability. In simpler terms, they include old gadgets or those that are already malfunctioning or damaged.

Some examples of e-waste are the following:

• Home electronic appliances
  • coffee makers, irons, microwave ovens, refrigerators
• Entertainment equipment
  • computers, digital cameras, DVD players, phones, radios, TVs
• Lighting equipment
  • lamps

These devices can contain chemicals like copper, chromium, and lead which are harmful to people and the environment so make sure not to throw them in your trash cans at home.

Proper E-waste Management and Disposal

To help sustain the environment and secure a better future for generations to come, here are several ways in which we can help reduce e-waste and avoid the dangers it can cause us and the Earth.

Buy responsibly.

Sometimes, the problem is that we buy things that we don’t really need. So before buying a new gadget, ask yourself if you really need a new one, identify your reasons and decide from there.

Take note of all the gadgets that you have.

Knowing what gadgets you already have at home will help you avoid buying a duplicate. Aside from this, organizing your equipment, connectors and wirings will help keep them in good condition for a longer period of time.

Donateor sell your e-waste.

If you have gadgets that you don’t use anymore, you can donate them to companies that recycle e-waste. If not, you can also sell them to those businesses that buy base metals or other electronic spare parts of devices.

Take your e-waste back to the shop.

Don’t know where to dispose of your old gadgets or appliances? Ask the shop where you bought the items if they collect or buy e-waste.

Learn about e-waste management options in your community.

Try to research about e-waste disposal programs in your locality.

Here in Baguio City, the local government is currently working on a project that aims to systematically collect and dispose of electronic waste.
