PAGASA Declares the Onset of the Northeast Monsoon Season

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has officially announced the onset of the Northeast Monsoon (Amihan) season in the country.

According to PAGASA, the declaration was made following days of consistent observations showing the strengthening of a high-pressure area over East Asia, which caused a surge of northeasterly winds across Extreme Northern Luzon. The agency confirmed the announcement through an official press release issued by Administrator Nathaniel T. Servando, Ph.D., dated October 27, 2025.

What to Expect During the Amihan Season

The Amihan typically brings cool and dry air, resulting in lower temperatures, especially in the highlands of Luzon such as Baguio City and the Cordillera region. Residents and visitors can expect chilly mornings and evenings as the season progresses.

PAGASA also noted that successive surges of the monsoon winds are likely over the next two weeks. These may result in rough to very rough sea conditions along the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon, posing potential hazards to small sea vessels and fishermen.

Aside from cooler weather, the Amihan season can also bring shear line formation, which occurs when cold and warm air masses meet—potentially resulting in cloudy skies and scattered rain showers in some parts of the country.

PAGASA’s Reminder to the Public

PAGASA will continue to monitor the nation’s weather and climate conditions throughout the season. The public, especially those living in coastal and mountainous areas, are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and advisories.
