UNESCO has declared Baguio City as the first Creative City in the Philippines in crafts and folk art category in October 2017. Aside from this, the City of Pines is also the fourth in the ASEAN Region to join the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN).
And like the other 64 cities from 44 countries in the UCCN, the city sees the importance of creativity and innovation in creating a sustainable and inclusive urban development.
UP Baguio has played an important role in the process of applying for the creative city tag from UNESCO. But with the belief that it doesn’t stop with the declaration, the institution, together with LGU, DOT-CAR, DTI-CAR and BACC, has been working on implementing a 4-year action plan (2018-2022) to keep Baguio’s status as a UNESCO creative city.
UP Baguio’s involvement in this matter is greatly in line with the institution’s vision and mission which is “to be a premier Art and Sciences University” and “to serve as a hub of knowledge development in Northern Luzon.”
UP Baguio, led by Chancellor Rovillos, believes that with the creative tag, Baguio City has to exchange cultural knowledge with other UNESCO creative cities, the rest of the ASEAN Region and the world. Hence, the International Conference on Southeast Asian Crafts and Folk Art.
